Basics of Plyometrics

A lot of trainers think that plyometrics is one of the most effective ways to increase vertical jump because of the combination of jump and weight training involved.
There are several plyometric exercises to choose from, from light reactive to high intensity reactive exercises. Light reactive exercises consist of exercises such as jump rope, low stair jumps and line jumps. Most of these exercises do not really aim to strain and are considered as relaxed movements at best. There are also high intensity exercises such as depth jumps, drop jumps, high barrier jumps and others. These however should be used wisely as overdoing high intensity exercises will lead to the weakening of the central nervous system, which recovers more slowly than the muscular system.
Exercises will ultimately lead to strong reactive strength and explosive power. But all these exercises should be done with a high amount of concentration as it is the proper execution of the exercises and not the quantity that matters most in plyometrics. When performance begins to waver, this is a sign to stop and rest the system for another day.
